Get the Most Out of Dry Shampoo

Good morning ladies!! I hope you all had a fabulous Monday and your week is off to a great start! It was back in the saddle for me yesterday and boy did we have a busy day! We got some great events coming up and I hope to share them with you soon. Some including a certain blogger that you know I am very fond of LOL! Details are to come!

Also, if you wanted the samples of R+F that I spoke of yesterday, be sure to email me your address so I can get them in the mail this week. I have 3 left, so if you commented you wanted some, be sure to email me at [email protected].

I am part of an Influenster group that gets to review beauty and hair products. Ranging from deodorant, eye masks to every kind of makeup you can think of. A few months ago I got a box with all kinds of dry shampoo, mascaras, eye masks for puffy eyes and new eyeshadow palettes. So today, I thought I would give you the skinny on the best dry shampoos on the market. And tell you how to get the most out of your dry shampoo.

Dry shampoo is a savior for many of us. There are days when we simply just don’t have the time to lather up. So thankfully, on those days we want to skip we can keep our hair looking flawless with a few pumps of dry shampoo. Also, it’s not good for your hair if you shampoo it daily – it strips the natural oils from your hair.

As great as dry shampoo is, you know that if you overdo it, it can present a whole new set of problems. One of them being people thinking you’ve dyed your hair gray—whoops– we definitely don’t want that! LOL!! To avoid obvious dry shampoo residue and to keep your locks looking fresh, check out some tips on how to use dry shampoo effectively:

1. Choose a shade that matches your hair.

Dry shampoo doesn’t only come in one color! You can get formulas for blondered, and dark hair. That way you don’t have to be as concerned about that tell-tale white cast. A dry shampoo with a hint of color is just the ticket!

Try: Batiste Dry Shampoo Hint of Color

2. Concentrate on the roots.

Your roots are where your hair starts getting greasy first. Therefore, make sure you’re really concentrating on applying the product there. Your ends really don’t need much dry shampoo, especially if you have longer hair. You can try a powder dry shampoo formula if you find it difficult to target a specific area with a spray.

3. Don’t spray it too close.

The instructions on your dry shampoo bottle probably suggest spraying the product at least an arm’s length away from your head. You might be tempted to spray the product closer to your roots to really get it in there, but that’s how you end up with an obvious white patch. A good guide is shown below.

Try: Drybar Detox Dry Shampoo

4. Keep it handy post-workout.

No time to hit the showers after you get your fitness on? Make sure that you have your dry shampoo handy. Look for a formula with a refreshing scent so it will cut through grease and get rid of that sweaty scalp smell. I find it hard not to wash my hair after a workout, but if you’re in a crunch this will help.

5. Work it in properly.

Take it easy with that spray nozzle for a second. You don’t want to apply more product than you need. Start off by applying a bit of dry shampoo then work it in. If you find that your locks are still looking greasy, gradually add more, working the product in as you go.

Try: Herbal Essences Naked Dry Shampoo

6. Tackle multiple hair problems at once.

Are greasy locks just one of your many hair woes? Select a dry shampoo that does more than soak up the grease. For example, if your hair is feeling pretty parched, you can look for a formula with keratin to help repair hair. Keratin is a protein that adds shine and makes your hair easier to manage, while smoothing it out if you have the frizzies.

Try: Suave Professionals Keratin Infusion Dry Shampoo

7. Apply it before your locks get greasy.

It might seem wasteful, but it saves you in the long run. Try applying a bit of dry shampoo before you go to bed. When you wake up, your roots won’t be anywhere near as greasy as they normally would be. I wrote about this in Beauty Hacks Every Girl Should Know.

Try: Pantene Dry Shampoo

8. Use it to get supersized volume.

One of the great things about dry shampoo besides the fact that it gets rid of greasy roots is that it can take hair from flat to full-bodied. For optimal volume, look for a dry shampoo specifically formulated to build body.

Try: Dove Volume And Fullness Dry Shampoo

9. Be patient.

Some dry shampoos instruct you to wait a few minutes after you apply them before you rub them in. If yours says it, make sure you listen. You have to give the product a chance to work its magic.

Try:  Amika Perk Up Dry Shampoo

10. Don’t let your nozzle get clogged.

If you’re using a spray dry shampoo, the last thing you want is the nozzle to get plugged. When that happens, you won’t be able to use the product until it gets cleared. After your application, wipe anyway any residue that’s left on the nozzle. If you’re worried about clogged bottles, you can also try a powder formula. If it does get clogged, run warm water over the nozzle to clear away the buildup.

Try: Oscar Blandi Pronto Dry Shampoo Powder

Well….I am doing everything wrong in applying dry shampoo….LOL You asked what our best dry shampoo trick is…it would be to follow your tips above because I know that’s why I have not been a lover of dry shampoo. I’ve been using it ALL wrong. I’m anxious to give these tips a try. We are off for a 2.5 hour drive to see the two grandchildren today. I’ve been missing them terribly so we will keep them home from day care today to get hugs, kisses and playtime. Have a great day Beverly!

All of these have butane and propane as main ingredients. I absolutely will not put that stuff on my head! I would love to find a brand that doesn’t include these ingredients.

Once I discovered dry shampoo I fell in love with it. I use the Dove brand. After reading your tips I realized I may not use it just right. So thanks. It’s also good if you color your hair since washing everyday can make color fade quicker. I’m off to VA tomorrow for a sisters get away. My 3 sisters and I are taking a long weekend to relax, reconnect and enjoy each other. I’m lucky to be able to call them my friends as well as sisters. I’m going to share your blog with them. Maybe they’ll sign up too. 😊. One is getting a necklace from J Bloom. I know she’ll love it.
