How to Style a Cardigan

Cardigans are one of those things that every woman has in her closet. They come in all shapes, sizes, colors, and prints, but all cardigans are not created equally. Some cardigans are better for certain body types, and others are better for certain outfits. It can get a little confusing sometimes, but wearing the right cardigan for your body type and for your outfit is important. So today let’s talk about it, and how to style them with different outfits!

The most common and classic style of cardigan is the waist-length cardigan. We all own a handful of these and we probably wear them with nearly everything. The classic waist-length cardigan should be worn with more fitted clothing, such as a dress or a high waisted skirt. What we do, and I am among those that do, we throw these cardigans on with any ole top and think nothing of it. The problem is the contrast in lengths is not flattering and creates a weird shape and proportion on your body. I rarely ever think of this unless I’m looking in a mirror and notice how thick I look from the side. I know I can’t be the only girl who checks the mirror to see if I’m looking think or frumpy – we ALL do it! Seeing visuals usually helps me, so I found some pics on the web to show you the difference.

Boyfriend Cardigans fall below the hip and can help hide our behinds. These should be worn with jeans, knee length pencil skirts, or shorts. They really will go with almost anything, as long as your bottoms are fitted and slim! However, these type of cardigans are not flattering with full skirts or dresses that are full around the hips. This can add pounds to your midsection or hips, so steer away from anything full in the bottom or loose fitting.

It seems that the longer cardigans are making a huge impact on fashion these past few years and they are here to stay! These are my all time favorite cardigans, they can be casual, dressy, belted, worn with shorts, skinny jeans, dresses – you name it and it’s a possibility. Here some visuals to show different ways we can style a longer cardigan. Curvy girls – don’t shy away from the long cardigan, these cardigans are for everyone!

You can see how versatile cardigans are and how much of an impact they make on our wardrobe. A simple cardigan can be worn with jeans, skirts, dresses, dress pants or shorts – and each time you wear it, it gives you a different look or outfit.

I said earlier, that the longer cardigan was my favorite, so here are some looks that I have worn different cardigans so far this season.

Which of these outfits is your favorite? How do you wear a long cardigan? Tell us in the comments.
