5 Things I Do To Start My Day

As I have gotten older, I have realized that starting my day off on the right foot has been beneficial to keeping my day positive and upbeat. When I was working away from home, the mornings were a struggle, especially during the years of getting the kids ready for school and getting out the door on time. Now in my 50’s, I have learned that I can make my day a good one, or I can let life’s obstacles set my mood for the entire day. Here are a few things I do that have kept balance, positivity, increased my faith, and is helping me reach and maintain a healthier me.

First 5 Steps Of My Day

  1. I’m going to be brutally honest here, sometimes getting up early is a HUGE struggle. As soon as my eyes open, I try and roll this ole bod out of bed and head to the kitchen. Most of you probably can guess that my first stop is the Keurig because coffee is a must for me. Something about the smell, the taste, taking a few minutes to get alone and drink that first cup is the #1 eye-opener and energy boost that I need. Most mornings, if the weather permits, you will find me with a Biblemor a Devotional, sitting outside listening to nature and enjoying the beautiful weather. Nature and coffee are a combination that is surely a gift from God, LOL!

2) Taking time each morning to look at my calendar, see what upcoming collaborations I need to work on, and allotting time for work, errands, free time, and housework is all in my planner. I use my planner to help me stay focused and to stay on schedule. It is essential for me to be productive throughout the day or time will get away from me and I will accomplish nothing other than scrolling my phone or tablet. Each week I set up my planner for my upcoming week, so I have an idea of what to expect. I include everything from taking photos, to going to the grocery store, right down to what time to start dinner. I only use this planner for Monday through Friday so I am able to keep my weekends clear for family time and me time. If you are not using a planner, I highly recommend the Prayerful Planner. It is filled with different pages, to help you keep yourself motivated and it offers scripture to help you through your week.

3) Each morning I take time to get in my office with my home gym essentials, you can see all of my favorite items here. (Click on Shop to see all the items that I use at home and when we travel ). As I get older, I can tell my joints and muscles are not what they used to be. I am trying my best to dedicate some “me” time to my mornings and work on rebuilding lost muscle mass and reversing some of the damage from my long bout with the Epstein Barr Virus last year. It took a huge toll on me from vitamin deficiencies, bone and muscle loss, extreme fatigue, and the onset of early arthritis. This can be stopped and we are in the process of reversing the effects of the virus. I see now more than ever how important it is to get and stay healthy. So every day for 20-30 minutes I am in my “gym” working with my must-have essentials, or taking a brisk walk at the park for 30-45 minutes, or doing a 20-minute session of pilates. It is making a huge difference in my life and how I feel! Not to mention, it clears your mind, and you feel so accomplished throughout the day. And…it will help you burn fat all day!

4) More than ever I see the need to study the Bible to strengthen my faith and walk with the Lord. My goal is to spend time reading, pondering, and learning all that He has to teach and offer me. In the world where we see evil stepping forward so boldly, we need to put on the Armor of God daily. I am now studying Galatians and truly enjoying learning new things, plus I’m remembering old things. Faith can move mountains and I truly believe that starting your day out with at least a few verses and prayer is The Key In The Morning And The Lock At Night.

5) I spend time walking and playing with my dogs. Since the kids have moved out, they have been by my side whether it is at my desk, or at the end of the bed while I’m watching TV. They are always happy to see me, and Ziva (the golden doodle) hugs like a human, so of course she gets walked and gets to have playtime. Their personalities are unique and bring so much joy and love to my life. How could I not start my day out with them in the Top 5?!

How do you spend your mornings? Do you have a routine? I would love to hear new ideas!

My mornings are similar -coffee, spending time with God in His Word, and a workout. I also use a planner which I have done for years. It keeps me on track of things that need to get done. Thank you for sharing your life with us. Have a blessed week!

Before getting out of bed, I tell myself 3 things I’m Grateful for. (Gratitude)

In the cold months I drink hot herbal tea in the morning. Not a coffee person & caffeine limited to kombucha in the warmer months. Usually late-morning.

I get out my master To Do list & check my calendar. Then make a To Do list for the day. (The master list has everything I can possibly think of that needs to be done.)

Thank you so much for sharing your daily 5! I retired a few weeks ago after teaching for 32 years. Structuring my days will be a little different from now on. Strengthening my Christian values needs some attention. Have a blessed week!

Happy retirement!! When I retired early, putting my faith first was my priority and some days I fail, but I get right back where I should be. I have to stay structured or my day will get away from me and I will have accomplished nothing lol!! I can tell since the kids moved out things are slowing down and I focus on things much better. I miss them, but I do not miss picking up behind them😜😂 Happy Tuesday!!

I loved your Sunday morning post today. My morning is somewhat like yours. My devotional book is Good Morning Mercies by Paul David Tripp, and my Bible. Prayer is so important and I strive daily to use it wisely and not just sound like I’m whiny. I go to Jazzercise every day but Sunday, as my personality works better with a group than by myself at home. Find what works for you, right? I have eyed that planner for a while and just might pull the plug today! Your precious dog would be such a joy. I miss mine but it’s not a good time for us to have one . Have a blessed day and many many thank yous for your blog!!

Hey Penny Jo! Yes, we have to do what works for us. I miss going to the gym but keeping Brooklyn during the day has hampered my getting out like I’d like to. And you can forget me getting out after 5 or 6, unless it’s to eat lol!! Happy Tuesday ❤️

Your daily 5 are what mine would be if I could find some self-discipline and get back on track! The last 18 months have made me lazy (and fat) although I’m not really sure why, since our daily routine really did not change that much. My husband and I both work 8-5 (or 7:30 – 6:00 i.e. too much) and never missed a day due to the craziness but we did stay home a lot more nights and weekends so maybe that’s the problem. Anyway, we also recently got a goldendoodle puppy to fill our empty nest after a few years and I think we must have temporarily lost our minds. He’s cute and sweet but totally like having a toddler around again so my morning routine just went up in smoke. I desperately need to get back in God’s word daily and I’m trying hard to get my body as healthy as possible at this age. Thanks so much for the encouragement – I think I will print this and lay on my desk!!

Good Sunday Morning to you Beverly! I am inspired by your list of 5 things you do each morning, so thank you for sharing. Women can always share and learn from each other, because that is the bond that women have.🤗. I pray before I get out of bed and thank God for blessing me with another day. I think about people that did not wake up to breathe life, so I am truly grateful for each day. I have been on a health journey for three years due to spinal cord surgery, My husband has been my caregiver, so again I am truly grateful. I have made tremendous progress and by the grace of God I am continuing to see the fruits of my physical therapy.

I agree with you we have to put on the “Full Armor of God, because there is so much evil and the enemy lives to steal our joy, but he is defeated everyday. Thank you for keeping us updated with your ideas, fashion tips and so many other tips that help women feel great and empowered by you! Cheers! 🙏🏼✝️❤️

My morning is an immediate walk to my kuerig and as the coffee is brewing in my cup I’m right there smelling that wonderful coffee aroma. I take my cup of wake me up and I sit on my couch and open up the Bible app and read the verse of the day and then read my devotional and pray. After about an hour or so I start my day cleaning or whatever needs to be done around the house. I don’t ever use a planner or calendar but I may look into the one you suggested. Thank you for sharing ☺️♥️

I am a huge planner person. I am curious about your planner pictured above is this what you use to do your daily/weekly planning in? I am wondering how you use this specific planner when there isn’t a calendar or weekly pages.
