How To Do A Home Pedicure

The sun is coming out which means our toes and feet are bound to see the sunlight at some point in time. With everyone staying home or maybe some are venturing out a bit, in case you can’t make it to your nail salon, here are some simple at-home steps to give yourself a pedicure. When I was in cosmetology school we were constantly doing these and in our downtime, we were giving each other the essentials…manicures, pedicures, and facials. (those were the good ole days lol)

Soak your feet for a perfect pedicure

One of the main things I use throughout the year, but especially in the warmer months, is a home foot spa. I use Dr. Scholl’s Pedicure Foot Spa, but it is a few years old and not available now, but this Conair is very similar to mine. If you want to go all out and get a really nice spa with foot massagers and all the bells and whistles, this Costway Portable Foot Spa is worth it. It will be my next splurge! LOL!!

Soaking your feet is essential before a pedicure, so if you don’t have a foot spa you can fill a small basin up with warm water and add 1/2 cup Epsom salt or Dr. Teal’s Pure Epsom Salt Soaking Solution. Give it enough time to dissolve, and then soak your feet for 5 to 10 minutes. This treatment is relaxing, but its main purpose is to soften calluses, so you can move on to the next step.

Exfoliate rough heels with a foot file

When exfoliating your feet there are a few ways you can do this. The cheapest way (but the most time consuming) is with a regular foot file like this one. I prefer the Electric Feet Callus Remover for multiple reasons, but mainly because it works and it’s fast. This thing will be a prized possession of yours and you can trust me on this one ladies! I use this weekly on my feet and it has made a HUGE difference in the feel of my feet. My heels are smooth, no hard skin…it gets rid of everything we want it to. Plus it works under water if you would like to use it in the shower or in your foot basin. I have tried multiple exfoliators and this is by far one of the best that I have purchased and it’s only around $25!

Trim your toenails

When it comes to clipping your toenails, cosmetologists will recommend using a straight nail clipper to create a neat line and avoid ingrown toenails. Another plus for keeping your toenails short is that it prevents polish chips.

Treat your feet to a foot mask

If you haven’t tried a foot mask, girl…you must indulge yourself! Putting on a foot mask can help extend the life of your baby-soft skin even days after your pedicure. If you find that your feet often feel dry, try a moisturizing mask that will nourish the skin of your soles and leave them silky smooth. If you’re looking for a more intensive callus treatment, use a peel mask that will dissolve rough skin without harsh, physical exfoliation. When rinsing off the mask, soak feet for an extra 10 minutes of added relaxation.

Always use a base coat

Don’t make the mistake of skipping out on base coat. It only takes a few extra minutes to apply, and it prevents chips and yellow nail stains that often come from dark polishes. One of my favorites is Essie First Base Coat which helps bind nail polish to nail plate for a longer-lasting pedicure. This is great when polishing your nails also!

Apply your favorite polish color to your toes

Add a pop of color, which looks good on all skin tones. If you prefer to keep things classic, a sheer nude is always a contender for compliments as well. Be careful not to layer polish on too thickly: instead, layer on several thin coats, allowing adequate time to dry between each coat for best results.

Top your Pedi off with a no-chip top coat

Since toes are always exposed in summer sandals, it’s a good idea to find a long-wear topcoat that will help our bright summer nails stay chip-free.

Be patient and wait for your toes to dry

Don’t let all your hard work to go to waste! Ensure you wait for your freshly coated toenails to completely dry before putting on any closed-toe shoes on. Even though nails may feel dry, rushing the drying process can result in unwanted smudges. I think we all have learned this lesson at some point in time!
